The Plastics, Rubber and Cablemaking industry comprises three discrete sectors of the process manufacturing industry:
  • plastics - including injection moulding, blow moulding, blown film, rotational moulding, fabrication, composites, compounding and reclamation, extrusion and thermoforming
  • rubber - including belt splicing, extrusion, rubber lining, tyre building and tyre retreading
  • cablemaking - including power transmission and communication cable
The PMB01 Training Package has been designed to meet the different needs of the industry by including units of competency for the different production processes within each sector. The Package also acknowledges the commonalties of each sector and will provide flexible, comprehensive and integrated training for new entrants and existing workers.

In modern usage, the word plastics generally defines a group of natural or synthetic materials which are capable of being formed or "moulded" into products using heat and/or pressure. Natural plastic substances are quite common but most of the synthetic plastics in use today were developed after 1920. See A History of Plastics ...

Plastics, Rubber & Cablemaking Training Package PMB07

About the PMB07 Training Package

The revised Plastics, Rubber and Cablemaking Training Package PMB07 replaces PMB01. The review has resulted in changes to units and qualifications including:

  • All existing units have been revised
  • Skill gaps have been addressed using a mixture of new units and units imported from other Training Packages
  • Over 20 new technical units have been developed
  • Certificates I, II & III in Process Manufacturing have been rationalised for use across all of process manufacturing and have been endorsed in the Manufacturing Training Package (MSA07 v2)
  • Certificate I in Plastics, Rubber and Cablemaking has not been carried forward
  • The three 'technical' certificates at each of Certificate II and Certificate III in PMB01 have been replaced with Certificates II and III in Polymer Processing
  • Direct entry is now possible for learners at Diploma level

Qualifications in the PMB07 Plastics, Rubber & Cablemaking Training Package

The qualifications framework provides qualifications from Certificate II to Advanced Diploma. The qualifications are:

  • PMB20107 Certificate II in Polymer Processing
  • PMB30107 Certificate III in Polymer Processing

About unitsof competency and Training Packages

A unit of competency describes the standard of skills and knowledge required for an aspect of a job.

The qualifications framework shows how the units of competency can be structured into a qualification. It also provides information on customising to meet the needs of an enterprise, industry or learner.

The assessment guidelines outline the industry requirements which enable assessment of competency and award of Statements of Attainment or qualifications.

The Training Package offers the opportunity to develop specialised skills to meet a company or a trainee's needs while providing a recognised set of skills that are transferable across the industry. Training can be done on or off the job; it takes into account new developments in your workplace through the ease of customisation of the competency standards.

Each qualification in the Training Package can be customised under the packaging rules specified. For example, different combinations of elective units can be chosen, and units can be imported from other endorsed Training Packages.

Units of competency can be customised by contextualisation - the inclusion of enterprise specific details into the range of variables and the evidence guide. This can reflect the specific work practices, processes and equipment of the enterprise, while maintaining the integrity of the unit of competency.
